About Gerontology Major in Youngstown State University

Gerontology, the interdisciplinary study of aging, is a rapidly growing field. There are now more than 30 million individuals who are over the age of 65 and make up about 13 percent of the American population. This growing population translates into the need for more professionals trained in the field of gerontology. Virtually every professional will be in contact with a maturing population. According to Jan Shirreffs, the director of Gerontology at Arizona State University, specialties in gerontology coupled with the undergraduate or graduate majors will give students an edge in a very competitive job market.

In 2010, the 65+ age population increased at a faster rate than any other U.S. population and now includes roughly 35 million people. This growing demographic calls for more professionals trained to meet the needs of aging individuals.

In the Gerontology major, you'll learn all about the diversity and complexity of aging in our society and dispel ageist stereotypes about older adults. You'll study theories, fundamental principles and core concepts of gerontology all while sharpening your basic skill set in the field.

Gerontology provides different career opportunities in health professions, non-profit organizations, recreation and leisure, for-profit businesses, education, research, government and service providers.
