One of the top research universities in the U.K., the University of Southampton is best-known for its innovative learning system. The university is a founding member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities. Originating from Hartley Institution in 1862, Southampton got the university status in 1952.

The University of Southampton offers undergraduate, postgraduate and foundation year courses in various disciplines. The different departments of the university include the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, Faculty of Environmental and Life Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Social Sciences. The university has seven campuses; amongst them, five are in Southampton itself and the other two are in Winchester and Malaysia, respectively. Highfields is the main campus of the University of Southampton.
