About George Mason University

George Mason University (GMU) is a public research university that began as a division of Virginia University in 1949. It became an independent university in 1972, and its main campus is located in Fairfax, Virginia. The university was named for its founder, George Mason, who penned the Virginia Declaration of Rights, which served as a model for the Bill of Rights in the United States Constitution.
