The City College of New York, the city's flagship higher education school, has been known for academic brilliance since 1847. Impactful, free-thinking learning and a liberal atmosphere enable students to study and grow outside of their comfort zones, allowing them to identify themselves as creative and innovative individuals. It is a public college that is part of the City University of New York System that provides higher education.
The college is located on 35 acres along Convent Avenue (130th to 141st Streets) in Manhattan's Harlem neighbourhood. In 1847, the renowned architect Goerge B.Post designed the college's building. Because of its excellent infrastructure and architecture, the college's building has been designated as a historic site. The college was formed by a wealthy businessman to give disadvantaged and immigrant children with free higher education based on academic performance. It was established in the same manner as analogous institutes in Boston and Philadelphia.
Many bright brains have emerged from the college. Some significant accolades have been bestowed upon college graduates, including the Turing Award, Pulitzer Prize, Fields Medal, and Nobel Prize. Three alumni have received the honour of being named Rhodes Scholars. The college offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, as well as a number of divisions to ensure that students have easy access to the courses.
CUNY School of Medicine, The Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture, The Grove School of Engineering, School of Education, Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership, Division of Interdisciplinary Studies at the Center for Worker Education (CWE), Division of Science, and Division of Humanities and the Arts are among the institute's various schools and divisions.
