The University of Wyoming was founded in 1886 as a public institution. It has an undergraduate enrollment of 8,869 students (fall 2021), a suburban setting, and a campus size of 1,998 acres. A semester-based academic calendar is utilised. University of Wyoming is ranked #202 among National Universities in the 2022-2023 edition of Best Colleges. The University of Wyoming's Laramie campus is nestled between two mountain ranges in the southeastern corner of the state. The university, commonly abbreviated UW, offers nearly 200 fields of study, including graduate programmes in business, law, engineering, and education. UW students can earn academic credit by enrolling in National Outdoor Leadership School courses (NOLS). Through this programme, students can participate in courses such as Alaska Mountaineering, Himalaya Backpacking, and Baja Sea Kayaking to explore a variety of interesting places and activities.

On campus, students can participate in events such as Battle of the Bands and UW's Got Talent and join more than 200 organisations. Student athletes may participate on multiple intramural, club, and varsity teams. Wyoming's intercollegiate Cowboys and Cowgirls compete in the NCAA Division I Mountain West Conference. Former U.S. vice president Dick Cheney is among the notable alumni of the University of Washington.
