About Children And Young People’s Nursing Bsc (hons) in University of Northampton

Our three-year Children and Young People’s Nursing course shapes your caring and compassionate attributes to provide excellent evident based knowledge to nurse children and young people from birth to adolescence.

Our programme is structured to provide you with a strong foundation in Children and Young People’s Nursing and equips you with effective practical skills with a blended approach to learning. You are supported throughout the course by a dynamic, highly skilled team of tutors and practitioners within practice and beyond.

Course Details

We put children and their families first.

We offer extra student support throughout your studies and during practice, meaning you are a supported by a Nursing Academic during your placement in a hospital.

Our University is part of a well-established, professional European network for Nursing and Midwifery. The Florence Network offers opportunities for future health careers and development to staff, academics and students.

Taught elements will include:

• Discovering your Identify as Children and Young Peoples Nursing.
• Medication management.
• Transforming and leading in Children Services.
• Detailed anatomy and physiological of the child and young person.
• An understanding of Mental Health in Children and Young People.
• Assessing, planning and providing nursing care.

Our Children and Young People’s Nursing course is ranked 16th in subject out of 111 universities overall (The Guardian University League Table, 2019).

Opportunities Abroad

The University of Northampton is one of only four universities in the country to belong to the European Nursing Module. This offers the possibility of a two week placement in one of around 24 different European countries.

You can experience a different health system, culture and life experience and gain an insight into the issues that are faced in an overseas nursing environment. This opportunity is available at a specifically negotiated time during your course, usually within the second or third stage of study.

Please note that you will have to meet the entire costs of this module yourself including flights, accommodation, food and travel within these countries where possible costs are kept to a minimum and financial help is available. The cost of the placement is dependent on the country you choose, it can range from approximately £500-800.

The two weeks spent overseas for this module count as placement hours as agreed with the NMC.

The University of Northampton is one of only three universities that offer this module as well as the 11 week Erasmus placement.

In addition to the European placements, we also provide the opportunity to experience nursing on an international platform. Please ask at an Open day for further information.

Methods of Learning

The course is split equally between practical placements and taught sessions on campus. Each module has specific time dedicated to face-to-face teaching and self-directed study. There is approximately 90 hours of face-to-face teaching in the first year of the course, this is reduced each year allowing you to become more confident in your knowledge and to hone your study techniques. You will be required to complete preliminary work for your sessions, much of this work will be facilitated through our virtual learning environment (NILE).

Assessments

You will be continuously assessed throughout this course to test your knowledge. Placements will also be assessed to ensure that you can effectively apply theory into practice within a healthcare environment.

Entry Requirements

All applicants must be 18 by upon commencement of the course and all applicants must have 10 years of consecutive education.

One of the following routes:

• BCC at A Level along with GCSEs grade C/4 or above in Maths, English Language and Science
• A BTEC level 3 Extended Diploma or National Diploma at DMM and GCSEs grade C/4 or above in Maths, English Language and Science
• A kite marked Access to Higher Education course with 30 credits at Merit or above,
• Successful completion of the first year of a relevant Foundation Degree, along with GCSEs grade C/4 or above in Maths, English Language and Science
• A Health and Social Care Diploma at Level 3 (advanced level) with GCSEs grade C/4 or above in Maths, English Language and Science
• CACHE Diploma achieved at grade B or above.

Other qualifications may be considered. Contact the Admissions Department to discuss these on an individual basis.

English Language, Science and Maths GCSE at grade C/4 or above are essential and must be achieved prior to commencement of the course. Recent academic study completed within the last five years is also required.

All offers of a place on the course are subject to:

• Successful Occupational Health Screening
• Clear Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check.

English Language Requirements

All International and EU students applying for a course with us must meet the following minimum English language requirements:

• IELTS 7.0 (or equivalent) with a 7.0 in all bands
  for study at undergraduate level.

University of Northampton Application Process

Basic Admission Requirements

1. Certified transcripts of high school/college/university
2. One reference required
3. Statement of Purpose depicting the interest of the applicant in the chosen course
4. MBA applicants must also have a proof of work experience
5. Arts and design applicant must also submit their portfolio 

The outcomes of the English proficiency tests taken by all of the international applicants. IELTS, TOEFL iBT, and Pearson PTE are acceptable tests. The minimal IELTS scores needed to get admitted are as follows:
